Follow Him simply wherever He may lead you and you will not have to think up big plans to bring about your perfection. Your new life will begin to grow naturally. I know you want to see the road ahead rather than trusting God. If you continue this way, the road will get longer and your spiritual progress will slow down. Gove yourself as completely as you can to God. Do so until your final breath, and He will never desert you.

It’s been nearly four years since I first caught the vision for something new. I was fresh on the heels of hosting the first ever, Refine retreat, and my mind felt clearer than it had in months. Back with my feet firmly planted in my kitchen, the veil that God had parted that weekend in the woods, seemed as if it were still open, still curling gently with the steady, rhythmic breath of the Spirit. In between chopping and stirring a pan of brussels sprouts, I glimpsed what would become, GraceTable.
I remember vividly the conversation God and I had about that idea. I remember offering up a few legitimate excuses, including my lack of know-how, lack of resources, and lack of time, and I remember how quickly God put each of those things to rest.
God brought along a web designer, a writing team, and tiny, but sufficient pockets of time to work.
GraceTable clearly was not mine.
I’m working my way through the Old Testament right now, and have just crossed out of the wilderness into the promise land. The thing that always strikes me, every time I read this same story, is the constant, visible presence of God in the wilderness.
Throughout all of their journeys, whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out. But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day that it was taken up (Exodus 40:36-37)
I’ve often read this passage from Exodus with a bit of wonder. At face value, it appears that for the Israelites, God made following Him simple: Follow the cloud. Stay when it stays, move when it moves. I’m often envious of this kind of clear guidance. The cloud never vanished from their sight. The chapter closes by stating that whether day or night, the glory of the Lord was visible to all of the house of Israel throughout all of their journeys (Exodus 40:38).
